TroonArt Galleries: Encaustics
My current collage and encaustic work has grown out of years of nature study, journaling, sketching, and collecting a personal storehouse of paper and ephemera. It is especially satisfying to layer these elements together, creating rich, complex, and jewel-like surfaces. My collage and encaustic work mimics the laying on of years in my life, a rich meld of images past and present, with the mysterious future always waiting to add another layer.
Materials with unique textures and symbolic images from my past often find their way into my work. Usually, the initial image becomes hidden beneath the subsequent layers, and can even take on new meaning as the parts come together. Colors are added using acrylic paint and layered tissue paper. Strokes of metallic foil are then fused to the final surface with a hot iron for a glinting flash.
